What is body doubling? The evidence, the history, and how to do it without a camera

Body doubling means working next to someone who is also working. What the research actually shows, where the idea came from, and how to do it without a webcam.

Body doubling is working on your own task while another person is present and working on theirs. Nobody helps, nobody supervises. The other person is just there, and for a lot of people that is enough to start the thing they have been avoiding for an hour.

The idea comes out of ADHD coaching, but it has quietly become mainstream: "study with me" videos, coworking calls, Discord study servers, and apps built around nothing else. This guide covers what body doubling is, what the research does and does not show, and the different ways to do it, including without a camera.

A working definition

The most careful definition comes from a 2024 study of 220 people who body double, published in ACM Transactions on Accessible Computing.1 The authors summarize how the community itself describes it: "using the presence of others to start, stay focused on, or accomplish a task."

Three things in that sentence matter.

  • Start. For many people the hard part is not concentrating, it is beginning. A body double lowers the cost of the first minute.
  • Stay. Once you are working, the presence makes drifting off feel slightly more visible, even when nobody is looking.
  • Presence, not help. The other person is not a tutor, a manager, or an accountability partner who checks your output. They are working too.

That last point is why body doubling is different from a study group or a coworking session with a shared agenda. The shared thing is the time, not the task.

Where the term comes from

Body doubling grew out of ADHD coaching in the United States. The ADHD coach Linda Anderson is generally credited with the term, and the Attention Deficit Disorder Association publishes her explanation of it.2 That page is refreshingly direct: "While there's no research to prove its effectiveness, ADHD body doubling is helping many people get things done."

CHADD, the US ADHD organization, summarizes it the same way in its news roundup, and the Cleveland Clinic calls it "a very simple and effective focusing strategy."34 Neither cites a study. ADDA's framing, helpful for many and unproven, is the honest one, and it is the one this guide keeps.

Why it seems to work

The oldest explanation is social facilitation, the observation that people behave differently when others are present. The classic origin story is Norman Triplett's 1898 paper, which looked at cycling records and had children wind fishing reels alone and side by side.5 It is usually told as "people work faster with company." A 2005 reanalysis by Michael Strube found the differences in Triplett's data were not statistically significant, so treat it as history, not evidence.

The more useful theory is Robert Zajonc's 1965 paper in Science.6 Zajonc argued that the mere presence of others raises arousal, and that arousal strengthens whatever response is dominant. On tasks you already know how to do, that means better performance. On tasks that are new or difficult, it can mean worse.

That cuts both ways for body doubling. It predicts a body double helps with the reading, writing, admin, and revision you know how to do and keep putting off. It also predicts that trying to learn something brand new under someone's eye can backfire. Most body-doubling marketing skips that second half. It should not.

What the research actually shows

Here is the honest state of the evidence as of September 2026.

People use it and say it helps. The 2024 survey by Tessa Eagle, Leya Breanna Baltaxe-Admony, and Kathryn Ringland is the largest study of body doubling we could find: 220 respondents from 30 countries, 88% of them neurodivergent, most with ADHD.1 In the authors' words, "Almost half (n = 108) of participants responded that they were more likely to complete a task when working on it alongside someone else, with the majority of people (n = 186) indicating that they are somewhat more likely or more likely to finish tasks when in the presence of another person." That is 85% saying it helps at least a little. Respondents body doubled mostly with friends (60%) and family (40%), then coworkers (37%). Only one in five had done it with strangers online.

Objective measurements are thin, and the ones that exist are mixed. A 2025 EEG study of 26 people with and without ADHD, presented at the ASSETS accessibility conference, had participants do reading comprehension alone and with a body double.7 The authors' summary in the poster abstract: "body doubling does not have a significant effect on performance, focus, or calm."8 The full paper adds that there were no consistent negative effects either, with promising trends for unmedicated ADHD participants, and calls it a safe strategy that warrants further investigation. A separate 2025 virtual reality experiment with 12 participants found people laid virtual bricks faster with a human or AI double in the room, but it is a preprint that has not been peer reviewed, and its own introduction notes that "no peer-reviewed controlled trials have examined its impact on adults with ADHD."9

Virtual presence lowers pressure more than it raises output. A 2025 experiment in Computers & Education compared 60 students working alone, next to a physical companion, and next to a "study with me" video.10 The video condition produced lower perceived pressure and higher accuracy than the physical companion, but no statistical advantage over working alone. A larger 2025 survey of 509 students found that feeling supported by peers in study-with-me settings predicted higher motivation and lower test anxiety, though that is a correlation, not a cause.11

So the defensible claim is narrower than the internet suggests. Body doubling is a real, widely used strategy that many people, especially people with ADHD, say makes tasks easier to start and finish. There is no solid proof that it makes anyone more productive in a measurable way, and there is some evidence that the gentler forms mostly work by lowering pressure. If a product tells you body doubling will double your output, it is making that up.

Body doubling is a spectrum

The same research group published a shorter 2023 paper proposing that body doubling is not one thing but a map with two axes: whether you share space and time with the other person, and how much you interact with them.12

In person at a library table is high on both. A video call with a stranger shares time and a virtual space, and is high on interaction. A study-with-me video is low on both, and it still counts, because people report that it works.

The paper's most useful line is about products: "almost all commercial technologies exist only within the map's upper right (high mutuality, high / space-time). Our results and discussion show that not everyone always benefits from that approach." The 2024 follow-up notes that "video calls may activate people's social anxiety," and the authors themselves describe 1:1 video coworking like Focusmate as something that "can be stressful or overwhelming."1

That is the gap camera-free tools sit in. Some people want to be seen. Plenty of people want to know someone else is there without being watched.

The study-with-me phenomenon

The clearest sign that low-interaction body doubling works for a lot of people is YouTube. According to YouTube's own culture and trends team, videos with "study with me" in the title were watched more than 520 million times in 2023, peaking in June during exam season.13

A 2021 study from KAIST, presented at the CHI conference, interviewed viewers about why.14 They used the videos to create a "personalized ambience at a lower cost, to find controllable peer pressure, and to get emotional support." The authors also note that the format works even when the creator never speaks, never shows what they are studying, and often hides their face.

Controllable peer pressure is the phrase to remember. Presence you can dial up or down is what most people are actually after.

Prices are what each company published in September 2026, in the currency they publish. Focusmate, Flow Club, and StudyStream sell video presence, and that is a legitimate choice. How to body double without a camera

This is how a camera-free room works in Kaizen, and the pattern carries over to any tool that shows presence rather than video.

  1. Join a room. Public Focus Rooms are free and open to anyone with an account. Each one shows how many people are focusing right now. Or a friend gives you their room code and you join that one.
  2. Pick a session length. The classic 25 minutes with a 5-minute break is the default, but any focus length from 5 to 180 minutes works. Long Focus, 90 minutes on and 15 off, suits deep reading or writing.
  3. Tag the session. Work, Study, Writing, Reading. The tag shows next to your name, so the room can see what people are working on without anyone typing a word.
  4. Start the timer. Your status flips to Focusing. Everyone else in the room sees it, and you see theirs: focusing, on a short or long break, paused, away, or idle.
  5. Stay present. Leave the app in the background for more than 15 minutes and the room removes you. That rule is what keeps presence honest. A room of ghosts is not a body double.
  6. Take the break with the room. Statuses turn to Short break, then back to Focusing. Nobody speaks, and nobody has to.

There is no camera, no microphone, and no chat. What other people see is a name, a status, and a tag. If a video call is the reason you have never tried body doubling, this is the version to try. For the student-flavored walkthrough, including private rooms for friends, see virtual study rooms.

When body doubling is not the answer

  • Learning something genuinely new. Zajonc's theory predicts presence hurts on difficult, unfamiliar tasks. Learn alone, then practice with company.
  • If being observed stresses you. The research names video coworking as a trigger for social anxiety in some people. Move down the spectrum: group rooms instead of 1:1, presence instead of video, a study-with-me stream instead of a room.
  • If you are looking for accountability on results. A body double shares time, not goals. For someone to check what you delivered, you want an accountability partner or a coach, which is a different tool.
  • If you do not want company at all. An Inside Higher Ed survey of 5,025 US students, fielded in 2024 and published in 2025, found that online-only learners were less likely than the group overall to say study groups and peer learning would help them.15 Some people focus best alone, and a timer alone is fine.

Questions

Is body doubling only for ADHD?

No. It comes from ADHD coaching and the strongest survey evidence is from neurodivergent respondents, but the underlying idea, that presence changes behavior, is one of the oldest findings in social psychology. Students, remote workers, and writers use it without any diagnosis.

Does body doubling work over the internet?

Many people say it does, and the 520 million study-with-me views suggest a lot of them never meet their double at all. The experimental evidence is mixed: one study found virtual company lowered pressure without improving results over working alone. Treat online body doubling as a way to make work feel easier to start, not as a guaranteed boost.

Do I have to be on camera?

Only in tools built around video. Focusmate requires a camera, Flow Club encourages one, and StudyStream is built around video rooms. Kaizen's Focus Rooms, Discord servers with cameras off, and study-with-me videos do not use one at all. The Focusmate alternatives page sorts the options by camera policy.

How long should a body-doubling session be?

Whatever you would do alone, with a timer. Francesco Cirillo's original Pomodoro paper describes 25 minutes of work followed by a break of 3 to 5 minutes, with a longer break every four rounds.16 Focusmate sells 25, 50, and 75-minute slots. Flow Club runs 30 minutes to 3 hours. Pick the length you will actually finish.

Is there scientific proof that body doubling works?

Not in the sense of controlled trials showing higher productivity. There is a large survey in which most people say it helps them complete tasks, one small EEG study that found no measurable effect, and one experiment suggesting virtual presence mainly lowers pressure. ADDA, the organization that popularized the term, says so plainly. It is a strategy worth trying, not a proven intervention.

Where does Kaizen fit?
